Description:
Christopher Silver, Department Head & Professor, Urban and Regional Planning Silver teaches, researches, and consults on international planning with a focus on urban development in Indonesia. He is a former USAID Urban Development Advisor to Indonesia. He was in Jakarta in the wake of the Tsunami. Ecological Disasters and Planning: A Multiple Choice Examination Val Beasley, Assistant Head and Professor of Veterinary Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine Beasley is the Director of the Envirovet Program in Wildlife and Ecosystem Health. Food Security and Famine: Preparation and Responses Robert L. Thompson, Gardner Chair in Agricultural Policy, College of ACES Thompson is the Chairman of the International Food & Agricultural Trade Policy Council. He was formerly Director for Rural Development at the World Bank, and President and CEO of Winrock International Institute for Agricultural Development. Disease Outbreaks: We all Share the Same Backyard Disease Outbreaks: We all Share the Same Backyard Uriel Kitron, Professor of Epidemiology, College of Veterinary Medicine; Co-Director, Center for Zoonoses Research. Kitron is an expert on the epidemiology and ecology of infectious diseases. His research includes West Nile virus and Lyme disease in the U.S., malaria and schistosomiasis in Kenya, Chagas disease in Argentina and dengue in Trinidad. Question and Answer: Streaming Video (Real Media) Panel Session 2: 5:00-6:00pm Personal Connections: A Student Panel Ishika Lokuge, a graduate student in chemistry and native Sri Lankan will present "Grief Never Grows Old: The Impact of the Tsunami on the Sri Lankan Population." Mona Haggag, senior in Art History, will speak of student led fundraising efforts coordinated with the Muslim students Association, Engineers Without Borders, Wesley Foundation, American Red Cross Club, Indonesian Students Club, Central Illinois Mosque and Islamic Center, and Council of Muslim Graduates. In the Wake of disaster: Understanding and Responding to Multiple Levels of Impact Kuanwu Lin is a Clinical Counselor at the Campus Counseling Center and a member of the Center's Trauma Response Team. He will discuss the impact of this global disaster on individuals, focusing on the unpredictable and unexpected affects felt by people outside the immediate region. He will also offer suggestions for individual responses. |
