The Tsunami Disaster and the Globalization of Relief

Tuesday, February 1, 2005 3:30-6:00
170 Illini Union A & B

Description:
The worldwide response to the December 26th earthquake and ensuing Tsunami resulted in an unprecedented amount of aid and support for the millions of victims.
Beyond the suffering and carnage of this global disaster, the Tsunami has called into question the capacity and will of the international community, states, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to adequately anticipate and respond to the Tsunami crisis and to other pending disasters of global import.

The Center for Global Studies invites the UIUC community to an open forum to evaluate the global relief effort in responses to the Tsunami and to explore its implications for future cooperation needed to address mounting and pending natural catastrophes of global proportions. Expert panelists will identify the dimensions of other natural disasters and propose strategies and solutions to these problems. Audience participation will also be encouraged.
