Global Information and Communication

CGS collaborates with the campus' Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Institute of Communications Research, University Library, and the Mortensen Center for International Library Programs to support research and instruction with a global perspective in the information and communication sciences.

Libraries in Times of War, Revoluation, and Social Change:
Dates: October 27-30, 2005
During the last several centuries, many nations' histories have been marked by war and revolution. Access to books and other information resources in libraries and related organizations has always been affected by the upheavals that characterized such times and places, yet our knowledge of what happened to them may be superficial, partial or non-existent.
The conference organizers hope that conference papers on aspects of this broad theme will examine what can happen at times of violent dislocation to an infrastructural mechanism that represents one way to achieve continuity and orderly social change. Such an approach offers a new kind of lens--and focus--for looking at important historical developments represented by wars, revolutions and other periods of rapid and transformative change.

Course Development: Global Information Systems
Professor Fernando Elichirigoity of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science is developing a new advanced undergraduate course titled "Global Information Systems" that will draw upon Elichirigoity's research in globalization and information infrastructures.

Global Studies Librarian:
Working with the University Library, CGS institutionalized the new faculty position of Global Studies Librarian to support courses within the global studies curriculum, to develop new information resources, and to provide cross disciplinary expertise to strengthen the library's collection in the literature of global studies.
